Our work

Books for Every Child

Good quality books and study material, given free to children who need them.

A ReadoBook volunteer standing with six children who are holding up new books outside their homes in Pune.

The gap

Why this is needed.

A school seat is free. The books that make the seat useful are not.

A single set of textbooks and workbooks can cost more than a family earns in a week, so the books arrive late in the year, second-hand and incomplete, or not at all.

A child without the book falls behind in the first month and spends the rest of the year catching up.

Our approach

What we actually do.

  • We collect books from people who no longer need them, and we buy new ones where a syllabus demands it.
  • Every book is checked before it goes out. Torn, outdated and incomplete copies are not passed on to a child.
  • Books go to the child directly, free, with no paperwork for the family to fill in.

How it works

Start to finish.

These steps happen in order, every time.

  1. Step 1

    A need reaches us

Through a family, a school, a volunteer, or a request made on this site.

  2. Step 2

We match the child to the books

Class, medium of instruction and syllabus — a Marathi-medium Class 6 set is not an English-medium one.

  3. Step 3

    We check every copy

Condition, edition and completeness. Anything we would not give our own child is not given to theirs.

  4. Step 4

    The books are handed over

In person where we can, at the door where we cannot.

Impact

What this has added up to.

We have not published figures for this programme yet.

ReadoBook keeps its own records of what goes out and to whom. Those numbers will be published here once the foundation has reconciled them and can name the period they cover.
